The Sands Casino has done something rather odd given the current health environment: they've expanding their smoking section. What used to be only 25% of the gaming floor, the smoking section now encompasses half of the casino.

At a time when health officials are attempting to reduce smoking in public as much as possible, Sands is concerned with surviving in this economy and the numbers are pretty clear. The average slot winnings per day in the casino's smoking area were $324.36 per machine compared to $181.01 in winnings in the nonsmoking area. The smoking area made over 75% more than the non-smoking area.

The big question now is going to be: will those numbers keep up for the months to come? Are smokers really gambling that much more or are they just more concentrated in the casino? I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers drop now. Less concentration means lower revenue per square foot and more smoking could make non-smokers avoid the casino.

Remember the days when dealers stood on 17s and a natural blackjack paid out 3:2? Well, those days are gone. More and more casinos are advertising their specials, be it $5 or some places are as low as $1 a hand now but that isn't a bargain for you, that deal is for the casino. To lure more people in, the casinos are changing the odds and making it much worse for the player.

The biggest change is how much they're paying you when you win on a natural blackjack. The new standard is 6:5, while it used to be 3:2. A bet of $10 used to get you $15 back, but now you'll only get $12. If winning less money is your idea of fun, go for it!

Another change is how dealers respond to soft 17s. The old rule was dealers stood on 17, period. Now, dealers stand on hard 17s but will hit on soft 17s (soft means one of the cards is an ace). This minor change to player actually puts the odds in the house's favor more by two-tenths of a point. Sure, that doesn't sound like much but a player with minimal skill in blackjack who is just keeping track of face cards and 10s reduces the house edge to only half a percent when playing with 6 decks.

Oh but casinos are doing more to increase their edge against you. Some casinos stopped letting players double-down after splitting a pair. So those two 8s you got look far less appealing. Oh, and more casinos don't allow for second splits either. Split a 9 and 9 to be dealt another 9? Enjoy your 18.

Ferreira was born in the cigar-manufacturing town of Tamboril, near Santiago in the Cibao region of the north-western Dominican Republic. The region is famous for merengue périco ripao, the traditional Dominican music, and his family, all big music lovers, filled his childhood home with the music spurring Zacarías on to dream of becoming a musical artist himself.

The desire to improve himself motivated him to leave for the country's capital, Santo Domingo, where he joined the Conservatorio Nacional and also sang in a local bachata group.

Ferreira then became a member of the Brugal rum company orchestra, where he remained for five years. His debut album, Me Liberé, was released in 1997 and won the prestigious Dominican music award, the Cassandra. Three years later his second album, El Triste, won the award for him for a second time.

In the winter of 2001, Ferreira travelled to the United States for the first time and played 77 gigs in just six-and-a-half weeks in New York.

One of the things I love about casinos are all the crazy things that happen in them, like the guy in a wheelchair who attacked a slot machine with a sledge hammer last week. But this happening is a little out of our jurisdiction since it's way up north.

Wallace began his career in comedy as a writer for "The Redd Foxx Show" and made a huge splash on the stand up scene as one of 150 competitors on the cable television special "The Big Laugh Off." Wallace captured first prize, which included club gigs all over the country.

In August 1969 opposition to the Vietnam War continued to increase with people attending anti-war demonstrations and demanding that the US withdrew from Vietnam.  The music of the time came from groups including The Doors, Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles.  The most famous music festival of modern times, WOODSTOCK, took place on a New York Farm on August 15-17 with more than 40,000 avid music fans attending to see The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and others perform live.  The fashions reflected the anti-war sentiment with military jackets adorned with peace signs, and other trends including long unkempt wild hair and headbands that showed the feelings of anti-establishment felt by the youth.

Chef, author, and television personality, Art Smith has devoted himself to bringing people together, through the sharing of a meal, with food that is made with heart and soul.

In 1997, he began a 10-year-long position as personal chef to Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham. He currently acts as the specialty chef for Ms. Winfrey's most talked about events.  In late summer 2007 he launched the acclaimed "Table Fifty-Two" restaurant, where the Obama's famously spent their first Valentine's as President and First Lady.

Art is a two-time James Beard Award recipient. In 2007 he received the James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of The Year Award, and in 2002 he received the James Beard Foundation Award for "Best Cookbook" for his first cookbook, Back to the Table: The Reunion of Food & Family (Hyperion, 2001). For his second cookbook, Kitchen Life: Real Food for Real Families (Hyperion, 2004), he received the prestigious 2001 Gourmand World Cookbook Award for "Best Family and Children's Cookbook." A National Bestseller and New York Times Bestseller, Art was selected twice as keynote speaker for Florida Governor Jeb Bush's "Celebration of Reading," sponsored by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. The newest addition to Art's cookbook series is, Back to the Family (Thomas Nelson), which debuted in March 2007.

Guests will see Chef Art Smith prepare a four course selection that includes his famous Tomato Pie Appetizer, Pistachio Crusted Chicken, a favorite of Ms. Winfrey, one of his fan favorite fruit cobblers & a twist on the Electric Lemonade that includes watermelon juice ice cubes.  Guests will be served a sample size of each item as Art is preparing it.
